In order to apply for the high school exchange program, you must be a current member of the Spokane-Nishinomiya Sister City Society. There are different levels of membership including an annual $10 student level. Before proceeding, click on the Membership button below and complete the membership process and payment. You will receive a confirmation email with log in details. Then return to this page and click the Apply button below and log into your account. You will not have access to the application page until your membership is active.

Application requirements

  • Applicants must be current members of the Spokane-Nishinomiya Sister City Society.
  • Applicants must have a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Applicants have be sophomore or junior standing in high school.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in Japanese language classes in high school or a related class.
  • The student and parents agree to hold the Society and its representatives blameless from any and all liability for personal injuries, property damages, loss of life or property, or any other damage whatsoever resulting directly from, or in any way connected with the Student Exchange Program, regardless of who or what may give rise to the occurrence of said damage or alleged liability.   • The student if selected is expected to behave as a responsible representative of his or her family, school and community which includes respecting the rules and regulations of the Nishinomiya school and the host family as well as Japanese laws.
  • The student and parents understand that if selected, he or she will abide by the rules and regulations as set forth by the Spokane Nishinomiya Sister City Society, which includes attending all pre-departure orientation sessions, the classes and activity schedule as outlined for the student at the high school in Nishinomiya, and participate to the best of the student's ability in the daily life of the Japanese host family.
  • Applicants that have been recommended by their Japanese teachers are given first priority. Mention to your teacher that you are applying and we will contact him/her for the recommendation. (Some exceptions may apply.)
  • Running Start students attending a college would need a sibling who attends the high school for the Japanese host student to be guided at the high school during their time in Spokane.
  • Parents of selected students will be required to sign the Waiver of Liability Agreement during the orientation sessions.
Application deadline is February 14. If selected to be interviewed, interviews will be in late February at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute Library room 203.
